Bulbs: Plant a sweet surprise for your future self!

There’s something so satisfying about tucking bulbs into the earth, knowing they'll pop up later to put on a show.

In gardening, “bulb” refers to any underground storage root that allows a plant to survive and regrow year after year. Even when the leaves and blooms above ground fade away, the bulb quietly rests below, storing up energy during its dormant period. This clever adaptation means you can purchase and plant bulbs while they’re dormant, setting the stage for a stunning burst of color.

We carry two groups of bulbs:

Hardy Bulbs

  • Just plant these in fall, and let nature do the rest!

  • Hardy bulbs are for sale in autumn. Most of them bloom in spring before other plants flower.

  • Examples include tulips, daffodils and hyacinth

  • Most will return to bloom again year after year, and some will multiply over time.

Tender Bulbs

  • These beauties need protection from the cold. Plant them after the last frost for a vibrant summer show!

  • The tender bulbs are for sale in spring. Examples include dahlias, gladiolus, and cannas.

  • When fall arrives, don’t leave them out in the cold! Dig them up once frost has nipped the foliage, let them dry, then tuck them away in a cool, dry, dark spot (like an unheated basement or garage) packed in peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust.

Planting bulbs is like giving your garden a gift that keeps on giving. Whether you choose hardy bulbs to brighten your spring or tender bulbs for a splash of summer color, each one promises a delightful surprise when it blooms. With a little care and the right timing, you’ll enjoy vibrant, flourishing flowers year after year!
